[pdx] Sic Transit Gloria Mason

2862.I suppose it had to happen eventually. Well, maybe it doesn’t have to happen, but it is.

Kristi Turnquist, The Big O:

Call it the Case of the Show that Refuses to Die. After a 46 year-run on KPTV (12), reruns of “Perry Mason” are finally leaving the Portland Fox affiliate. But Perry and the gang aren’t leaving Portland airwaves. The show moves to KPDX, aka PDX TV (Channel 49/cable 13) at 8 a.m., as of Tuesday, Sept. 4.

One of the things that make Portland, Portland, and one of the things that made growing up as a TV kid in Oregon so damn pleasant was that at noon, on KPTV (which I won’t call ‘FOX 12 Oregon’, thankyew) at noon.

This was a Portland quirk back before Portland quirks were so fashionable. It didn’t require you to put a bird on it. It was just a verity, stable as Mt. Hood at sunrise, dependable as a traffic jam on the Banfield at rush hour. It just was. And now, Patrick McCreery, the man who said, back when he came on board KPTV in 2009 (as reported in The Big O by Tom Hallman, Jr.):

When Patrick McCreery was named general manager at Portland’s Fox KPTV (12) six months ago, corporate bosses gave him a free hand as long as he followed an unwritten 42-year-old rule: Don’t mess with “Perry Mason.”
It’s untouchable,” McCreery said. “We can add shows and take others off the air, but ‘Perry’ is nothing to fool with.”

I’m wondering what part of what he said he didn’t understand there. He seemed to get it and get us, and KPTV wasn’t the wonderful sexy beast it once was, but it was still pretty okay.

Now what do you have at noon? Are you sitting down, Portland?

Racheal Ray. One of the Four Hamsters of the Apocalypse. And more talk shows, because we all know how much you wanted talk shows from Steve Harvey (who’s edgy) and Anderson Cooper (who’s edgy) and Edgy McEdgyson, who’s edgy too.

I mean, just go out and kill Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny while you’re at it.

Someone want to go check Rod Anders’s grave to see if he’s spinning in it?

And you can still watch Perry with your lunch … if you want to eat lunch at 8:00 AM.

This is going to take more than putting a bird on it to heal.

Courage*, Portland.

*apologies to Hart Williams.

[pdx] When a FOX12 Newsie Identifies With the Occupy Portland Troops …

2711. … even with all else being equal, it seems a game-changer, somehow, when a reporter from FOX 12 comes off so honestly.

I appreciate her candor. In a time like this, when so many are hurting and the news (FOX, particularly) just kind of hang on the sidelines with a “gosh, how interesting” detachment, it’s nice to see honesty.

Jamie Wilson’s been amongst our favorite KPTV reporters for a long time … oh, heck, we’ll admit it, she’s easy on the eyes.

But now we have to ask ourselves: how much will it cost someone like this to be caught out in the wild having an opinion … especially like this … of her own?

Stay (as they say in the biz) tuned.

The Conspiracy Exposed: KPTV Reveals At Least One Of The Neighbots Amongst Us

1835.

Two nights ago KPTV 12, on The 10 O’Clock News, ran a story about a family on NE Cleveland Avenue in Gresham who had their house looted to the tune of about $30,000 whilst they’re on vacation and happened to leave a window open.

During the course of the interview the intrepid reporter got several vox pops from the neighbors around the address. And, at about 1:20 in, a certain chyron caught our eye. Do you see it?

Neighbot?

Look real close again:

Neighbot? Closeup

Scary. They’re looking more and more lifelike every day.

We’re betting the clanking the neighbors at night might have heard probably wasn’t actually her walker.

The lower third … where men are men, women are women, and conspiracies are exposed.

[liff, pdx_history] A Quick Note: Yesterday’s KPTV

Posted in Channel 12, KPTV, Oregon's 12, pdx_folklore, pdx_history, pdx_media on November 2, 2007 by Samuel John Klein Portlandiensis

1078. Some months back, when transitioning to the New Blogger, I absolutely trashed my blogroll. I just realized I am quite remiss in not adding back Yesterday’s KPTV sooner.

Yesterday’s KPTV tells the story of the people and times of KPTV in its pre-FOX days. In some ways, KPTV was Portland television, and had some of Portland media’s most well-known and beloved non-news names (Gene Brendler, Addie Bobkins, Heck Harper, Rusty Nails the Clown and, of course Ramblin’ Rod) and Portland’s most longstanding and beloved news anchors as well (Lars Larson back when he was nice, Kim Singer, Gary Hill, Kathy Smith, Ivan Smith (no relation) and even Tom McCall).

Yesterday’s KPTV pulls it all together into a cool package (complete with history, photos, clips, old logos, and all that) that is good for hours and hours of time-wasting for the nostalgic Portlander. Do not go there if you’re on a deadline.

It’s one of my favorite sites. Such good memories.
